UK asparagus production is forecast at 1,799 tonnes in 2001, a figure very much in line with last year despite a six per cent rise in planted area to 870ha. According to the USDA, this is largely due to poor weather, which substantially reduced yields, particularly on heavy land. Wastage levels are also expected to be higher at two per cent, compared with just 0.2 per cent in 1999 when conditions were more favourable.
