Salad festival on cue in Lea Valley

Mr Tomato, Little and Big Supercue and Pippa Pepper were on hand on 12 May to open the 2nd Great British Cucumber Festival at Waltham Abbey, Herts.

Some 4,000 visitors attended the event organised by a committee of producers and local businesses in the Lea Valley: Abbeyview, Valley Grown Salads, UK Salads, Stubbins and Glinwell as well as local Tesco stores Marriot Hotels, Premiere Inn and the local town partnership.

Stephen Hedderly, festival chairman, said: “We had almost 4,000 visitors and about 35 stalls. We probably got through about 3,500 cucumbers and raised around £5,000 for local charities.”

The event also featured the Great British Cucumber Relay Race, live bands, and plenty of salads to try and buy.
