Herefordshire-based S&A Produce has teamed up with Leominster Infants’ School to educate pupils on the importance of healthy eating. It aims to particularly show the benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables, and how they can easily be made part of a balanced diet, as part of the school’s Healthy Eating Day.

Rebecca Edmonds, S&A’s PR and planning manager, visited the school on Wednesday to give a demonstration to all pupils at morning assembly on ‘Strawberries and Healthy eating’. This involved making smoothies with local strawberries picked freshly from S&A’s farm at Marden that morning.

Part of the school’s Eco Week, the aim of the Healthy Eating Day was to show pupils that incorporating fruit and vegetables into their daily diet can be a fun and easy way to stay healthy.

S&A Produce also recently sponsored and installed a new allotment and tool shed on the school’s grounds, which will give pupils an opportunity to plant and grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The allotment will be officially opened at a Grand Ceremony on the school’s sports day on May 22, and so the Healthy Eating Day will kick start a programme of training to get the children in top condition for winning races.

As a local farming business, S&A believes in the importance of promoting locally grown produce. The company is committed to supporting local community and educational initiatives, and this is the first in what the company hopes will be a series of partnerships with local schools.

Edmonds said: “Supporting the local community is very important to us and we are delighted to have been able to work with Leominster Infants’ School. Healthy eating is a major issue these days, with ever growing concerns about children’s health. Making local fruit and vegetables available to people - especially children - is a great way to encourage young people to eat their 5 A DAY.”

Meta Philpotts, headmistress at Leominster Infants’ School, added: “On behalf of the whole school, I’d like to thank S&A for its input into Eco Week. We always trying to encourage our pupils to eat more fruit and vegetables, and if we can show them how tasty they really are, we can hopefully make a real difference to their lifestyles.”
