The Scottish Crop Research Institute at Invergowrie will be opening its doors in June to welcome families for a farm open day.

The event, on June 10, will be SCRI’s contribution to LEAF Open Farm Sunday, an annual event that aims to celebrate all aspects of farming and the countryside. Farmers welcome visitors and show them how the industry works, what farms do and why farms matter.

The 175ha centre at Invergowrie is also a working farm in addition to being Scotland’s leading centre for crop research. The farming team help with research on barley, potatoes and other staple crops and also soft fruits such as raspberries and blackcurrants. SCRI is also a member of LEAF.

This year’s Open Farm Sunday at SCRI will see tractor tours, hand-on activities, treasure hunts and the chance to use microscopes and computers. There will also be a photographic art competition and a chance to see SCRI’s own weather station.

SCRI is also the venue for The Living Field, an educational facility set up in 2002 aimed at promoting plant and insect identification and conservation. The latest development is a resource centre and that will be on show to the general public for the first time on Sunday June 10.
