The Southern Hemisphere Association of Fresh Fruit Exporters (SHAFFE) has forecast citrus production from Argentina, Australia, Peru, South Africa and Uruguay will be broadly in line with last year, while exports are expected to rise by almost five per cent.

Total output for easy peelers, grapefruit, lemons and oranges is expected to reach 6.25 million tonnes, just 0.5 per cent up on 2009 - but exports are forecast to climb to 2.234mt, an increase of 4.9 per cent.

Production in Peru, South Africa and Uruguay is predicted to rise by 2.3 per cent, five per cent and 11.6 per cent respectively on 2009 levels.

Meanwhile, Argentina is set to see its output fall by four per cent and Australia’s is forecast to be in for a six per cent decline.

Overall it is orange and easy-peeler production that are rising, by 5.8 per cent and 8.8 per cent respectively.
