Competition minister Gerry Sutcliffe is to question the supermarket groups Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Safeway/Morrisons over allegations that they are giving suppliers an unfair deal.

The meeting will also be attended by Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs. The move comes amid an inquiry, prompted by the Office of Fair Trading, into supermarket practices after research revealed a widely held belief that the voluntary code on suppliers was being violated.
