Tesco is restructuring its Scottish distribution operations with the closure of two depots in Dundee and Livingston.

The closures will be replaced with a new larger facility in Livingston, although the retailer has yet to get planning permission for the depot.

Tesco said the changes amounted to a £75m investment and were needed to meet "increasing customer demand".

The new depot is expected to be open in the summer of 2007 and staff at the existing two sites will have the opportunity to transfer to the new depot or to jobs elsewhere in the company.

A total of 432 staff are employed at the Dundee depot and 768 at the one in Livingston. The new Livingston depot will employ about 1,400 workers.

Tesco distribution operations director, Laurie Mcllwee, said: "It's important to stress that these changes in no way whatsoever reflect on the quality of those operations closing but demonstrate our ongoing commitment to customers, and to Scotland overall, through major long term investment.”
