US pear sendings to the UK reached a three-year high this season.

Early shipments in September were not affected by the weakening sterling and the smaller-than-average European crop helped boost demand.

Some 32,000 20kg boxes were shipped to the UK in the 2008-09 season, starting with Bartlett, which makes up around a quarter of exports, before moving on to Green and Red Anjou, which represent 50 per cent and 15 per cent of sendings respectively.

Total US pear production reached 17.4 million boxes this season, down from 19m boxes last year.

Jeff Correa, international marketing director at Pear Bureau Northwest, told FPJ: “Overall, we did well this season. It can be such a difficult market and we can be easily intercepted by European supplies, which are just three days away.”
