Waitrose weighs in with giant avos

Waitrose is stocking an enormous avocado with up to 10 times as much flesh as standard varieties.

The new variety - named Linda, meaning “beautiful” in Spanish - weighs up to 1.5kg, more than the weight of two international rugby balls.

The fruit stays on trees in Peru’s Chincha valley for up to a year to achieve its exceptional size.

Waitrose is also selling Extra Large Onions from Spain the size of grapefruits.

Waitrose salads buying manager Richard Bickerton said: “Linda’s generous proportions mean she can be cut into four chunks and served with prawns for a modern take on the popular Seventies dinner party starter.

“She has a superb creamy texture with a very intense and slightly nutty avocado flavour. “
