Blueberries

The US market has absorbed greater volumes of Argentinean-grown blueberries to date this 2008/09 season, according to local news sources.

Exports to week 43 were at 1,300 tonnes, with the bulk of the volumes headed for the US, translating into a 42 per cent increase on the same period last season.

Prices in the US have fallen as a result to US$17.5/kilogramme for both Argentinean and Uruguayan blueberries, while value on the European market has dropped to US$18.75/kg (€15/kg).

The hike in volumes is due to a larger crop in Argentina as new orchards continue to enter commercial bearing coupled with more favourable weather conditions following last season’s damaging frosts.
