Compulsory pre-shipment inspections for all of Pakistan’s exports are being mulled over by the country’s government in an attempt to build Pakistan’s international reputation, according to Pakistan’s The News.
The cabinet directed the commerce and several other relevant ministries to make arrangements for the mandatory inspection.
Pakistan’s exports have been troubled by poor quality or lack of certification to international standards. Russia only recently lifted a ban on the country’s citrus, and maintains one on Pakistani rice.
The country’s exports also had rejection problems at European ports last year.
An unnamed government official told The News corruption was rife in Pakistan’s quarantine and port authorities, and the country didn’t have the right facilities to issue phyto-sanitary certification regardless.
