Sri Lanka’s ministry of agriculture has announced a plan to boost fruit cultivation in an effort to lessen the country's dependence on imported produce and increase exports.
According to a report by online Sri Lankan newspaper, ColomboPage, the ministry has announced it will distribute 7m fruit trees and provide training to people interested in becoming commercial growers. A grant of around US$750 would also be made available to potential growers to purchase equipment.
Fruit with export potential, such as pineapple, banana, grapes, and citrus would receive priority, the newspaper reported.
