avocados

Peruvian avocado exports have risen by 33.8 per cent in value to US$46.6 between January and May period of this year, according to data from analyst Maximixe and reported by Andina.

Given that volume only rose by 5.4 per cent during the same period, the upturn in value is attributable to better prices for the fruit on account of greater demand.

Average prices rose by 26.9 per cent during the first five months of the year to US$1,824 per tonne, Maximixe said.

The agency claims demand has risen from markets including Germany (which represented 287.9 per cent of the export volume growth), Canada (219.8 per cent), Costa Rica (54.6 per cent), the UK (43.1 per cent), the US (28.2 per cent) and the Netherlands (16.5 per cent).

The Netherlands remains the leading export market for Peruvian avocados, absorbing 62.5 per cent of the offer, according to Maximixe.

Meanwhile, Italy became a new market during the five-month period, while after two years Ireland once again received avocados from Peru.
