Glasshouse tomato production

The total surface area dedicated to glasshouse vegetable production in Germany rose to 1,464ha last year, some 10 per cent higher than the average figure for 2001-2006, the country's Federal Statistics Office has revealed.

The main areas of vegetable production under glass are concentrated in three regions – Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia – which together account for around 68 per cent of the total.

According to the report, tomatoes, cucumbers and salads make up almost 56 per cent of the Germany's glasshouse vegetable volumes. But while cucumber ouput remained more or less the same in 2007, tomato production grew again following a downturn in 2005 and 2006.

Salad production, meanwhile, has risen to its highest level since 2003 after declining during the previous year.
