Colombian banana production is forecast to fall by 8-10 per cent this year due largely to the impact of inclement weather.
Production has been affected in general across the main producing region of Urabá, Colombian grower-exporter Banacol told Eurofruit.
“Usually, production increases in second half of the year, above all between September and November,” María Uribe Jiménez explained.
“This year, however, the production peak isn’t as pronounced as last year, partly because of the climate and partly because some companies took measures to reduce excessive production in these months.”
With exports also down from Ecuador and Colombia, Banacol anticipates more sustainable prices on the market during the second half of the year.
