The inclement weather that much of Spain has experienced over the past week may have been bad news for the country’s tourism sector, but for growers in the south-eastern region of Murcia the heavy rains have comes as something of a relief.

Alfonso Gálvez Caravaca, general secretary of fresh produce association Asaja Murcia, said the rains that had covered the province during the last week had helped alleviate the concern that the “terrible drought” had brought to growers.

However, Mr Gálvez said his organisation remained “greatly concerned” that the authorities in Murcia were relying on the weather to solve the region’s endemic shortage of water.

“Rain is always welcome in the Murcian countryside, and more when the land is dry as a result of a lack of water resources,” he said in a statement.

“We hope the coming weeks will bring more rain, which will benefit citrus sizes and alleviate the tensions that the drought has brought about.”
