The first Netto store to return to the UK has opened its doors today in Moor Allerton, Leeds.

It will stock 2,000 lines, including a large range of fruit and vegetables, non-food products and an in-house bakery.

The joint venture between Sainsbury’s and Danish supermarket Dansk Supermarked is launching through 15 trial stores in the north of England, with a further three to open next week. It is seen as a move by Sainsbury's to take on existing UK hard discounters Aldi and Lidl.

It is the first time Netto has been relaunched in the UK after a four-year absence, following Asda’s sale of the discount chain.

Managing director for Netto UK, Morten Möberg Nielsen, said the Danish retailer, which has a 50 per cent stake in Netto, had chosen the UK as it is ripe for more growth in the discount sector.

“There is definitely room for more in the UK discount market. As well as this, we had developed our stores in such a way that would suit the UK consumer,” Nielsen told Radio 5 Live at the Moor Allerton opening this morning.
