The fanfare around the 'Great American Eclipse' didn’t escape the fresh produce industry.

As millions of Americans turned their heads to the sky on Monday (21 August) to catch a glimpse of the first solar eclipse to travel coast to coast across the US in 99 years, a number of fruit and vegetable marketers took to social media to celebrate the occasion.

After unveiling a big banana in the Big Apple on Sunday, Chiquita playfully rejoiced in the few moments before and after the eclipse where the crescent outline of the sun resembled the shape of a banana; a phenomenon Chiquita referred to as the banana sun.

Kiwifruit marketer Zespri also got in on the action with a re-enactment of the eclipse in GIF form.

Del Monte took to Twitter with a similar approach involving an avocado.
