Val Venosta

Josef Wielander, director of Italian group Val Venosta Fruit and Vegetable Producers (VI.P), has said that he believes the group faces a more challenging season in 2008/09 as a result of higher production in eastern Europe, but that excellent quality, good sizing and a slightly larger volume of product compared with last season in the Val Venosta region has put the company in a strong position for the months ahead.

As the harvest came to an end, Mr Wielander said VI.P would approach the market with confidence. 'We’ve had great weather during harvesting and I’m convinced this will be a good year,'Josef Wielander he told Fruitnet.com. 'Things will definitely be tougher, with the east likely to have more than they are saying. This will mean that demand and supply won’t be in equilibrium.

However, he pointed to the quality and sizing of the fruit as positives going into the season. 'Our quality is very high this season and we have a good quantity of fruit available at sizes more or less the same as last year, so I think we’re prepared for a strong campaign.'

Meanwhile, VI.P's organic department is moving to a new packhouse this month, having outgrown its current location. The new facility employs state-of-the-art machinery and the highest technological standards, enabling VI.P to be even more responsive to customer needs and to guarantee punctual delivery.
