Atlanta

Univeg has reached a deal with Chiquita Brands International for Atlanta that is valued at US$85m (€54.9m), with Atlanta continuing to serve as Chiquita's provider of banana ripening and distribution services in Germany and Austria.

The deal is expected to combine Univeg's sourcing capabilities and Atlanta's distribution network, creating a unique international system for the delivery and distribution of fresh produce, a joint statement said. In addition, the groups are looking to help further develop their share of the German and Austrian retail market.

'The acquisition of this leading German fruit and vegetable trading company proves Univeg's continued commitment to delivering added value to our customers,' said Hein Deprez, chief executive officer of Univeg. 'Moreover, we can optimise our infrastructure and benefit from the customer service capabilities and quality assurance system of Atlanta in Germany and Austria.'

Atlanta registered a turnover of €950m in 2007 and has 17 locations in Germany and Austria, as well as agencies in Spain, France, Hungary and Italy. Group chief executive officer Peter Jung said that the move will enhance Atlanta's market position in Germany.

'This strong cooperation will strengthen Atlanta's leadership as one of the largest fruit and vegetable distributors in Germany. By using Univeg's global expertise, we will combine overall sourcing, distribution and logistics capabilities and enhance our range.'

The Atlanta deal follows the news that Univeg has reached an agreement to become the preferred supplier of fresh-cut and convenience products to French distributor Creno.
A group statement said that the partnership would open the door for Creno to increase service levels to its existing distribution channels and to expand the group’s product range offering to its network.

In turn, Univeg will be able to further develop the potentail of this distribution network, and increase the group's market share in France.
