Sharp Interpack has pledged to continue working on reducing its carbon footprint through a series of innovative designs and products that go further than their competitors in reducing waste.

According to a company statement, the packaging group's target for 2010 is to implement the '3Rs': reduce, reformulate and recycle.

This is in a bid to clear the 'confused picture' created by a media focus on a wasteful consumer society, Sharpak said, with the group keen to promote the fact that food packaging has enabled convenience shopping, allowed for greater consumer choice, reduced food waste, freed up leisure time and contributed to food hygiene and security.

'As we move into 2010 our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint has never been stronger,' said Andrew Copson, deputy managing director at Sharp Interpack in the UK. 'The greatest challenge we face is meeting the demands of the customer and at the same time reducing the levels of waste, but it is a challenge we are able to meet head on. That is why we're committed to implementing our 3Rs programme.'

As part of the '3Rs' programme, Sharp has invested £2m (€2.3m) in a system that has reduced in-house waste.

When the group introduced its recycled PET punnet to a leading UK supermarket, the tonnage that was saved was the equivalent of 10 double-decker buses, or 21 African elephants. Added to this, the recyclables reduced carbon emissions which were the equivalent of providing 100 homes with electricity for a year.

In January, the group launched its c-LOW mushroom punnet, boasting a carbon footprint 23 per cent lower than conventional punnets, and Sharpak has said that it will continue to carry out product lightweighting and reduce denest programmes.
