A violent hailstorm has reportedly struck fruit trees in the area around Forlì, a major stonefruit producing zone in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna.

According to a report published on the website of the Corriere Ortofrutticolo, the 40-minute storm struck in the area between San Leonardo and Sant’Andrea, close to Forlimpopoli and between Forlì and Cesena.

Initial estimates suggest as much as 90 per cent of the affected production had been destroyed, with topfruit, stonefruit and strawberries in San Giorgio, Malmissole and Bagnolo the worst hit.

'Following an already disastrous year, we've not onluy suffered hail damage but flooding to greenhouses and fields,' one grower told local news website Romagnaoggi.it.
