The members of Cesena-based Italian fresh produce cooperative Orogel Fresco have elected Giuseppe Maldini as their president for the next three years alongside vice-presidents Mastino Realdo and Paolo Piovacari.

The group's membership has also named a new executive committee, comprising Giancarlo Babbi, Bruno Binelli, Gianni Renzo Bocchini, Marcello Filippi, Dario Guiducci, Giuseppe Maldini, Realdo Mastini, Daniele Montanari, Paolo Piovacari, Davide Placuzzi and Franco Spada.

Mr Maldini, who is from the region of Romagna, has been in charge of Orogel Fresco since 2003, when the merger of various cooperatives operating in the fresh division of Gruppo Orogel Fruttadoro gave rise to the new cooperative group.

'I consider this nomination to be a new starting point,' he commented. 'I will continue to work towards further growing the company and above all our membership, even though the task I face during the next few years certainly won't be easy given the difficult dynamics of a market where prices are rising and consumption is falling.'

With six packhouses based mainly in the Romagna region and more than 1,250 members located across 16 regions of Italy, Orogel Fresco marketed more than 70,000 tonnes of fresh fruit and vegetables last year, 35 per cent of which was exported.
