Turners & Growers will spend US$3m on an upgrade to its Manawatu facility, which will expand it by 25 per cent and implement a refrigeration system, according to the Manawatu Standard.

The cool chain system will be completed by March 2009, and central region manager John Crowther said the upgrade will be a positive move for freshness and quality control.

He said the refrigeration would be especially important in summer for berries and stonefruits, adding that the company plans to operate at night to help beat the heat.

Turners & Growers has been operating for more than 100 years, and is one of New Zealand’s largest marketers and exporters of fresh produce.
