The C&C Group has opened a second branch in New Spitalfields, under the name of Gilgrove (New Spitalfields) Ltd.

The stand, which opened for trade on Monday morning, is wholly cool-chain and specialises in fruit and salads.

Managing director Peter Fowler told the Journal: We already have an outlet in New Spitalfields for exotic fruit so we knew the scope was there. There is a lot more retail trade in Spitalfields so we had to be there.' The opening of a new stand represents C&C's second acquisition in 14 months, last year it acquired Gilgrove Flowers in New Covent Garden market.

Fowler added: 'We are very upbeat about the prospects for fresh produce, especially since the publication of Saphir's recommendations for the London wholesale markets. The findings have added to the confidence of the wholesale sector of the fruit and vegetable trade and I have always expressed that confidence.'
