The programme is the result of a close and collaborative effort between 13 organisations across the raspberry sector that have formed a consortium to ensure that vital developmental work does not cease following the demise of Scottish Soft Fruit Growers funding.

The Scottish Executive's support has been welcomed across the industry. National Farmers' Union of Scotland soft-fruit working group chairman Peter Thomson said: 'The industry has shown its commitment to the sector with significant funding and the addition of this investment from the executive complements that.' Consortium member BerryWorld's technical director Tim Newton was also emphatic in his support. 'The whole industry is involved and it is a chance to work together and give customers what they want to improve raspberry sales,' he said.

Fellow consortium member KG Fruits was equally enthusiastic. 'This is welcome news,' said md Nick Marston. 'It is a great opportunity to build sales and the raspberry market through extending the season.'
