Peas keep pub place

In a national cook-off held in Oxfordshire last month between chefs from the different chains, northern chefs were pitted against their southern counties adversaries in a 45-minute race to prepare and cook a starter, salad or main course featuring peas.

Lizzy Barby emerged victorious as the country's top vegetable chef and will enjoy a weekend for two in Paris and £1,000 of kitchen equipment or training.

The awards were launched last year when one restaurant chain threatened to remove peas from its menu. "The awards aim to encourage higher standards in preapring and cooking greens in pub and restaurant chains and help to address government targets for the nation to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day," said Martin Riggall, Processed Vegetable Growers' Association chief executive.
