Hairyape now has more than 3,500 registered suppliers on its search engine for the fresh produce trade, www.hairyape.co.uk. "Over 500 companies and organisations have been added since the beginning of this year," said the site's webmaster Martin Clifford.
The database is made up of 1, 865 exporters (53 per cent) ; 617 growers (18 per cent); 857 importers, wholesalers and produce marketing companies (25 per cent) and 161 trade services businesses (4 per cent).
The site is truly international with suppliers coming from 130 countries. The UK represents 10 per cent of that total, while other European countries account for the largest share at 26 per cent. A close second are suppliers in Asia representing 21 per cent, Australasia, Africa and the Americas with 11, 12 and 13 per cent respectively. Other regions make up the remaining seven per cent of the total.
"The site has between 2,500 and 3,000 unique visitors each month with approximately the same amount of searches," said Clifford. "After almost four years building up a massive database, hairyape is now proving to be a useful asset to those in the fresh produce industry looking to find produce and make new contacts."
But the team at hairyape is not resting on its laurels yet. "The target is still for 4,000 supplier companies by the end of the year," said Clifford. "As the Industry becomes aware of the possibilities of the internet, hairyape is there to help them find relevant information quickly, rather than sift through a colossal search engine."
