Saskatoon gets UK relaunch

JO Sims has relaunched the saskatoon berry season in the UK at London’s Canadian consulate last week.

An unusual berry, saskatoon is in fact a member of the apple family but tastes like a cherry with a hint of almond. JO Sims is hoping to capitalise on the UK consumers’ growing love affair with sweet healthy berries by re-introducing this deep-purple coloured fruit.

The fruit is predominantly aimed at the processing and ingredients market as it is easily infused or can be incorporated into baked and dairy goods. It has a two-year shelf-life once individually quick frozen.

All JO Sims saskatoons come from a Manitoba grower Prairie Lane which grows 60 per cent of Canada’s entire crop of the fruit. The fruit has been re-launched in the UK following the resolution of a novel foods issue with the EU courts and UK Food Standards Agency.
