Southern Salads revs up

Southern Salads has added the Mercedes 2546 Actros model truck with a flat-floored MegaSpace cab to its fleet, delivering to fast-food outlets and pub chains.

Since its arrival, the Tonbridge-based firm has also taken delivery from local dealer Sparshatts of Kent of an 18-tonne Mercedes Axor 1824 and is due to set two more new Actros on the road in July.

Southern Salads provides premium leafy salads, vegetables and fruit to the foodservice, manufacturing and retail sectors. It produces mixes of produce, much of it grown locally, which it then supplies in packs of various sizes to its customers.

Its all-Mercedes fleet of five tractor units and the single 18-tonner work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure that all produce reaches its destination fresh and on time.

The tractors trunk through the night to the national distribution centres of major fast-food outlets. Meanwhile, the rigid, which is fitted with a refrigerated box by RVL Insulated Bodies, of Framfield, East Sussex, delivers to restaurants, hotels and other outlets within the M25.

Southern Salads site manager Steve Hulse said: “We have an excellent and long-standing relationship with Mercedes-Benz and Sparshatts of Kent. Reliability is the key - they’re going out every night of the week so we need to know that our trucks are not going to break down and be off the road for any length of time.”
