Barlow: 'Industry is delighted with Tesco's engagement with English product'

Tesco sold more English apples and pears in 2013-14 than any other retailer, according to an independent industry league table.

Sales of Conference pears, Cox, Braeburn and Bramley apples are the native varieties that have continued to prove exceptionally popular with customers.

While the retailer is now turning its thoughts to the next UK season, which traditionally runs from September to July, through working closely with growers in a suntrap in the Kentish Weald, Tesco will have its first new season Discovery apples in store from this weekend (9/10 August).

Added to that, The Society of Growers of Top Fruit at Cottage Farms in Kent have been working with Tesco to develop a state-of-the-art packhouse to cater for the UK's leading retailer.

Darren Clough, produce sourcing director at Tesco, said:“We’re thrilled to have topped the English apples and pears league table once more. We work in partnership with the best apple and pear suppliers across the country to deliver the highest quality and the best varieties to our customers.

'The record number of English apples and pears enjoyed by our customers this season is testament to the hard work of our suppliers and our collaboration with them.”

Adrian Barlow, chief executive of English Apples and Pears, said:“The industry is absolutely delighted with the way that the Tesco team has engaged with us to achieve this outstanding performance. Their share of the English apples produced last season not only puts them ahead of all other retailers but also outperforms their overall share of the British grocery market.

'They developed their plan for the season in partnership with the growers so that it worked for everyone involved and showcased the very best of the English season. We are looking forward to collaborating with them in the same way as we enter the new season.”
