One of the UK’s largest handlers of fresh produce, Minor, Weir and Willis (MWW) lands in the FPJ Big 50 2015 just behind Asda’s buying arm.

Established in 1963 and located in Birmingham, MWW specialises in the procurement of produce from around the world for sale in the UK and Europe.

The firm sources over 100 products from more than 40 countries, and also works closely with British growers to offer local produce when in season.

The MWW group incorporates associate produce companies in the UK, Spain, Holland and Germany, and these include growers, wholesale and catering suppliers, and marketing companies, through which the firm can supply produce across Europe.

In the financial year ending 31 December 2013, the Birmingham-headquarted business upped its profit from just under £2.2 million in 2012, to £3.1m in 2013. Net UK turnover, meanwhile, was £137.4m in 2013, according to results posted to Companies House, up from just under £124m in 2012. The majority of its sales came to UK customers, with the rest coming from selling to others in the EU.

Writing in the report accompanying the latest company accounts, MWW MD Sant Mehta said: “The external commercial environment is expected to remain competitive in 2014, although we remain confident that we will have a satisfactory level of performance in the future.”
