A potato vodka brand from Scotland has won a prestigious drinks award in Paris.

Arbikie Vodka, distilled by the Stirling family on its Highland estate, was crowned best vodka at the Spirits Cocktails show in Paris.

Herald Scotland reports that the family revived a distilling tradition to the area which stretches back to the 18th century when production of the vodka - made entirely from ingredients owned on the farm - started last year. The vodka is made using Scottish water and three types of potato - Maris Piper, King Edward and Cultra.

Commercial director Iain Stirling told the Herald: 'As a family business, it is wonderful to have the freedom to be innovative. We believe that drinking should be no different from the way we eat with goodness from the ground up, from the farm to bottle.

'We have embraced the French concept of 'terroir', which describes how the natural elements of a place determine the characteristics of wine, to create exceptional spirits.'
