Rachel Green Yes Peas

Campaigners are calling on schools to put more peas on the dinner menu during Great British Pea Week.

The Yes Peas! campaign and UK pea vining industry are working together to lobby schools to incorporate the versatile green vegetable into more meals during Great British Pea Week, which runs from 10-16 July.

The School Meals Mission has been set up to highlight the importance of healthy school meals and the high nutritional content of peas, and schools are being urged to pledge their support via social media and share their recipe creations via the hashtag #GreatBritishPeaWeek.

Participating schools will receive a recipe e-book with meal ideas, while families are also being encouraged to take part and cook up original concoctions.

Great British Pea Week aims to recognise the 700 British growers who produce two billion portions of peas year round, with the UK the largest producer and consumer of frozen peas in Europe. The average Brit eats nearly 9,000 peas a year.

Campaign ambassador and chef Rachel Green said: “Great British Pea Week is a great celebration of British pea farming. It’s truly amazing how our 700 farmers produce over two billion portions a year! It is certainly something to celebrate and commemorate.

“We’re excited to be inviting schools to pledge their support for Great British Pea Week during the harvesting season - peas are an amazing source of nutrients and we want to inspire children to enjoy eating greens and educate the nation on where their peas come from!”
