A new pallet shroud overwrap that has the potential to increase the life of long-distance shipped produce has been developed by Coveris.

The new design, which is currently undergoing trials, fits over the entire pallet and is described as ideal for products susceptible to dehydration in shipping. The overwrap can also keep out contamination from pests and rainwater, explained head of food science Eric Duncan at Fruit Logistica.

The new packaging, known as a Freshlife transit film, features oxygen permeability and moisture prevention, and is suitable for a range of products from avocados to kiwis and melons.

Coveris category director Rick Smith added that the film has been developed in response to calls for better packaging during transport, with current tests set to establish how many extra days life the new film can add.

Duncan also revealed the company is working on ethylene and oxygen “scavenging” products, that’s to say active packaging for the control of ethylene and oxygen in packs.

Removing oxgen for sensitive but slow-respiring products, such as cut fruit, could bring substantial benefits, he said, adding that Coveris has made significant progress with meat and is working on new technology for the more complex fresh produce sector.

Unlike other technologies available, Coveris aims to integrate such innovations into the design of the pack, he added.
