Fresh produce companies launch first programme together, offering Canadian retailers and consumers an expanded seasonal window

Oppy and AC Foods have teamed up to bring Australian-grown Sumo Citrus to Canadian retailers, expanding the availability of the premium citrus brand during the Northern Hemisphere’s offseason. The programme leverages Australia’s Southern Hemisphere growing season, with the first shipments expected to arrive in late August.
Recognised by its distinctive Top Knot, Sumo Citrus is known for its sweet flavour, easy-to-peel rind and seedless eating experience.
“Canadian consumers continue to seek high-end produce with outstanding flavour, and Sumo Citrus has earned a loyal following around the world,” said Steve Young, director of sales at Oppy. “We’re excited to align with AC Foods to bring Australian-grown Sumo Citrus to Canada. This programme provides our retail partners with a differentiated citrus offering while delivering the quality and eating experience consumers expect from the Sumo brand.”
The launch expands Oppy’s citrus portfolio and supports its strategy of offering year-round category opportunities for retail.
“Sumo Citrus strengthens our programme by creating a new seasonal opportunity for retailers,” said Oppy’s Category Director Rodrigo Lopez. “The timing complements existing programs and gives consumers access to a best-in-class branded product during a unique marketing window.”
For AC Foods, the alliance represents an important step in extending the brand presence and visibility beyond the California season with Canadian retailers.
Global sales manager Greg Asta at AC Foods shared: “Oppy is the ideal partner to introduce Australian-grown Sumo Citrus to Canadian retailers. Their relationships across the market and expertise in premium produce make them well-positioned to grow the brand’s distribution. We’re excited for Canadians to experience this special fruit during our harvest season.”
This strategic alignment builds on growing consumer demand for high-quality citrus and creates new merchandising opportunities for retailers during the late summer and fall.
