Approval of trial shipments of fruit subjected to cold treatment during transit opens new opportunities for the Andean nation

India has approved the first pilot of shipments of Chilean fruit subjected to cold treatment during transit, marking a significant milestone in relations between the two countries. The pilot will cover a wide range of Chilean fruit, including cherries, stonefruit, apples, pears and citrus.

Its authorisation follows extensive work by the Chilean Agricultural and Livestock Service (Sag), the Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa), and the Agricultural Attaché in India to demonstrate the strength of Chilean food safety protocols.

Although Chile is internationally recognised as a fruit fly-free country, cold treatment offers an additional guarantee of safety without the use of chemicals.

The decision opens up new opportunities in a market considered strategic for Chilean exporters.
