Indian consulates across the US have organised mango festivals to highlight a range of varieties and boost the profile of imported fruit.

According to a report from the Economic Times, The Consulate General of India in New York and the Indian Embassy in Washington DC both held events at the end of June. The Consulate General of India in Seattle had hosted the ‘Mango Magic: Promotion and Tasting Event of Indian Mangoes’ earlier this month.

The events attracted thousands of visitors with complimentary tastings of premium Indian mangoes showcasing the country’s diverse mango-growing regions.

“Indian mango is popular and gaining a lot of attention here. Everywhere people are talking about them, there is immense enthusiasm for mangoes from India,” said deputy consul general of India in New York, Vishal Harsh.

Indian mangoes are a hit with both US natives and members of the Indian diaspora and Harsh said the consulate would host more mango festivals in the future.

Bob Huskey, vice president of fresh produce at Costco Wholesale, had said in Seattle that the retail giant has just recently started selling the Indian Kesar mangoes, “and they have been selling faster than we can bring them back in”.
