The first shipment of Taiwanese pomelos into Japan is to be celebrated with an official launch.

Around two tonnes of the fruit, which has passed strict regulations, has been shipped to Japan, reported the Focus Taiwan New Channel.

An official from central Taiwan’s Changhua County said the launch would help improve market access for the fruit and increase the income of Taiwanese growers.

Changhua magistrate Cho Po-Yuan said at a press conference held to celebrate the opening of the Japanese market, that fruit would have to pass strict regulations that took into account the appearance, weight and size of the fruit.

Taiwan has also marketed white pomelos in China and Singapore, but low demand for the fruit there was reflected in prices, Tsai Wen-Lin, the chairperson of the farmers' association of Ershuei township, told the website. She added that sales in Japan were expected to garner higher prices and improve the livelihood of growers in the area.
