Country has potential to secure enormous volume and value growth in banana exports, says leading supplier
Vietnam could earn US$4bn a year from banana exports, if industry plans to expand production, harmonise certification standards, and even develop a national brand come to fruition.
That’s according to Phạm Quốc Liêm, chairman of leading producer-exporter Unifarm, who reportedly told Vietnamese newspaper Thời Báo Ngân Hàng that the industry could eventually secure production value of US$20,000 per hectare – around ten times more than the present average value of its 161,000ha.
In 2024, the country earned around US$380mn from banana exports, placing it in the top ten banana-exporting countries worldwide.
The majority of Vietnamese banana exports go to China, South Korea, Japan and the Middle East, but are also apparently available in the EU and North America.
