The Tainan city government has announced the return of a direct shipping service to Japan for the region’s Irwin mango, opening pre-orders at the start of May.

According to a report from the Taipei Times, it will be the third year in a row that the service is run by the Tainan Yujing Lian Hsing Fruit Production Cooperative and retailer Breeze Super.

Cooperative manager Lin Yi-chen said the service has been well-received and shoppers can order mangoes at Breeze Super supermarkets in Taiwan. They are then shipped in a single batch by sea to Japan and delivered to recipients with the help of Japan-based delivery service provider, Yamato Transport, he added.

The Cooperative also launched a new offering this season for domestic customers, “champagne mangoes”, which were developed using high quality Irwin mango strains.

Lin said the trees are grown in a type of soil similar to that of France’s Champagne region, hence the name. The mangoes are left to naturally ripen and fall, leading to increased sweetness and an average Brix of 15.

Instead of using paper bags, growers individually wrapped in net pouches to protect from fruit flies while providing maximum sunlight exposure. Reflective panels are also used on the ground below the fruit to enhance colouring.
