This week’s GS Intelligence report tracks GCC wholesale floor prices and the onset of the anticipated Valencia price drop as reactionary South African volumes start hitting Gulf ports.

Key market highlights
Wholesale trading across Gulf hubs saw routine adjustments across staple lines in Week 43, but South African citrus is bearing the brunt of supply imbalances: lemons have plunged into deeper distress – trading down to US$6.67 in KSA, while Valencias have officially begun their anticipated price correction as heavy late-season arrival volumes hit regional distribution floors.

Strategic outlook: The predicted Valencia floor adjustment
Three weeks ago, GS Intelligence warned that the panic-loading of over 2mn South African Valencia boxes into the GCC would inevitably break floor prices. That prediction has materialised: as heavy volume started hitting regional ports simultaneously, Valencia prices took an immediate US$5-US$10 downward correction across KSA, UAE, and Bahrain. Unprogrammed volume spikes continue to undermine price stability.
This reinforces a fundamental rule in fresh produce logistics: chasing spot market spikes without committed retail programme coverage always ends in margin compression. As arrival volumes peak over the next fortnight, trade desks must prioritise rapid inventory rotation over holding out for price resistance.
