Gulf Market Prices

This week’s GS Intelligence report tracks GCC wholesale floor prices, a sharp US$5 jump in Valencias, Kenyan avocado price drops, and why sudden surges in South African loading threaten to collapse the market.

Powered by Global Star Group, GS Intelligence delivers weekly market intelligence for growers, exporters, logistics networks, and fresh produce buyers.

Key Market Highlights

Most core categories held steady with minor wholesale floor adjustments in Week 40, but volume dynamics are shifting fast. Kenya avocados dropped on heavy oversupply, while South African lemons and mandarins remain pinned under continuous price pressure.

Strategic outlook: the danger of reactionary loading

Just weeks ago, South African vendors were terrified to load Valencias into the Middle East after seeing the disastrous returns on lemons and mandarins. But with current Valencia performance driving prices up nearly US$5 on strong demand, the panic flipped instantly. Roughly 2mn boxes have now been rushed toward the Middle East as everyone rushes to capture the rebound.

Let’s call this what it is: a setup for another self-inflicted market crash. Knee-jerk, unprogrammed volume spikes will inevitably flood the ports, break the floor, and turn a healthy recovery into a bloodbath. Sustainable supply chains require disciplined, continuous programme loading across the entire season – not spontaneous, reactionary rushes that cannibalise their own gains the moment a spot window opens.
