World’s largest specialised reefer operator strengthens New Zealand presence with appointment of former Zespri manager

Cool Carriers, the world’s largest operator of specialised reefer vessels, has appointed Mike Knowles as its regional representative in Tauranga, New Zealand.
Knowles was previously strategic relationships manager for shipping at kiwifruit exporter Zespri, which confirmed his planned departure earlier this year.
Glenn Selling, chief operating officer at Sweden-based Cool Carriers, said the new arrival would bolster his company’s local expertise.
“New Zealand has long been one of the key global trade routes for Cool Carriers. Mike’s appointment reflects our continued investment in strengthening our capabilities across the region,” he commented.
“His extensive experience across shipping and logistics, combined with his proven leadership in complex operational programmes – including the successful execution of shipping operations throughout Covid-19 – will be invaluable as we continue supporting clients across Oceania.”
International experience
Knowles worked for almost four decades at Zespri – including one decade in its Antwerp office, where he was promoted to the role of Europe Operations Manager – and built a reputation as a leading expert in shipping and logistics.
While in Belgium, he oversaw discharge and port operations for all Zespri-chartered reefer vessels, working closely with partners including Cool Carriers.
On his return to Tauranga in 2001, he became shipping manager for Zespri, where he led its global shipping function and played a key role in developing a long-term shipping strategy – one that proved resilient to supply chain disruption during the pandemic.
More recently, in 2025, Knowles supported the operation of the first kiwifruit reefer vessel to China powered by biofuel.
Commenting on his appointment, Knowles said: “I look forward to joining Cool Carriers at an important time for the reefer shipping industry – a sector undergoing significant transformation.
“Cool Carriers’ strong market leadership, sector expertise and collaborative approach provide a solid foundation for continued growth in the region and I am excited to contribute to that next chapter across New Zealand and Oceania.”
