The retailer declared the event a success

Some of the UK’s top food and drink writers gathered at Booths Artisan restaurant and store in Kendal earlier this month for the Guild of Food Writers’ annual lecture and lunch.

It was the first time that the national food and drink event was held outside London, so Booths was keen to host the occasion as a passionate supporter of local and seasonal produce.

The event was attended by leading freelance food and drink journalists, including Guild of Food Writers chair, Clarissa Hyman, who writes for Country Living Magazine. The line-up also included Kate Hawkings who writes for the Sunday Times and Guardian; Hattie Ellis who writes for The Times and Saturday Telegraph Magazine; and Emma Sturgess who writes for the Guardian and who is also the Food Writers’ Guild Restaurant Reviewer of the Year 2009.

During the day, the guild was given a guided tour of Booths’ Kendal store and Artisan by Booths’ Tracy Hargreaves to learn more about how the leading regional retailer works with local producers who are truly committed to producing quality crafted and specialist foods.

Former Coronation Street actor Sean Wilson, aka Martin Platt, sent some of his own local produce to the event.

The guest speaker was Professor Andrew Hill from the University of Leeds, who has a long-standing interest in food and our appetite for it. His lecture covered the stimulation and shaping of appetite and the effects appetite can have on our society.

Hargreaves said: “We are proud to have been chosen as the first venue outside London to host the Guild of Food Writers’ annual lecture and lunch.

“Booths has been committed to sourcing products that are high-quality, excellent tasting, competitively priced and fresh from the counties it serves - Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria and Yorkshire - since 1847. We continue to highlight provenance to our customers and support regional farmers and growers wherever possible.”
