British blueberries strong at M&S

British blueberries have arrived in store in Marks & Spencer and the supermarket is lauding one of its largest growers.

Blueberries grown in Scotland are retailing at £1.99 a punnet during September and October.

Ross Mitchell, one of M&S’s major Blueberry growers based in Laurencekirk, about 25 miles south of Aberdeen, supplies fruit from one of the most northern fruit farms in the UK.

Mitchell claims this year’s crop of late season blueberries is a strong one and its has been a good year for the product.

Mitchell, who was awarded Soft Fruit Grower Of The Year in 2009,started to grow soft fruit after running a Pick Your Own business at home and saw the potential for expansion into commercial supply.

The business now supplies blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and is expanding into cherries.
