Agrexco is anticipating increased quantities of cherry tomatoes this season, with higher quantities on all original programmes. “Last season we more than doubled the programmes set for the UK,” said product manager Eitan Zvi. “The quality was particularly good, due to the excellent growing conditions, and the increased demand has given us a wider customer base. As a result, we are expecting a substantial increase in volume for this season here in the UK.”

Cherry tomatoes are now commonplace, but cherry on-the-vine is fighting for shelf-space as consumers become more aware of quality and taste. “Last season we brought in approximately 300 tonnes, this season we hope to increase this significantly. Conchita is the main variety but we are developing a variety that will be more robust, with sweet flesh and slightly thicker skin ñ factors that should allow it to be air-freighted at a more competitive price,” said Zvi.
