The German Association of Fruit and Vegetable Growers (BVEO) is calling for acceptance of unapproved pesticides

Karl Schmitz, managing director of the BVEO said: “While 25 different pesticides are authorised for use on hothouse tomatoes in the Netherlands, only five of these are permitted in Germany.”

He said the other 20 pesticides are not authorised because, due to their weak sales potential, the manufacturers never bother to apply for permits.

Schmitz called for EU member states to allow pesticides authorised in one country to be legally used in another, claiming that German products with low contaminant levels are widely accepted in other countries while products with 100 times the level legally permitted in Germany are sold there.
