Ian Lloyd, a founder director of Guernsey Fresh Herbs, has died aged 67.

He was attending a celebration dinner in France with his wife Sue on April 22 when he suddenly collapsed at the table. He was rushed to hospital, where he died.

Ian was president of the Guernsey Growers’ Association from 1983 to 1985 and an active member of the Guernsey Young Growers’ Group for many years.

With the decline of the Guernsey tomato sector, Ian and Sue decided to switch to herb production for local and UK consumption.

Simon Falla later became a director of the company, which now has 20 acres of glasshouses devoted to herb production.

Ian was one of a group of growers who visited Newhaven to examine landing ramps for roll-on, roll-off vessels. The information gathered helped lead to the introduction of ramps at St Peter Port, Guernsey, which has a similar tide to Newhaven.

Ian will also be remembered as much for his witty after-dinner speeches as for his controversial outlook. He firmly believed in the need to move on, insisting it was wrong to remain in the same rut.

freshinfo’s condolences to Ian’s family and friends.
