The six major wholesale markets in London will come together next week for the first ever London Markets’ Month and the re-launch of the Association of London Markets.

New Covent Garden, New Spitalfields, Western International and Borough have linked up with meat market Smithfield and fish market Billingsgate to raise their profile in the capital, show their economic and health benefits and strengthen their connection with independent retail and foodservice sectors.

A series of events throughout October will make up the promotional activities, culminating in the inaugural London Markets’ Symposium at City Hall on October 23.

Rosie Boycott, the newly appointed chair of London Food, will speak will speak at the conference. She said: “The wholesale markets of London allow consumers to access locally produced, top-quality food at affordable prices…

“The London Food Board strongly supports London Markets’ month. The markets play a key role in the food industry of London and we are keen to work with them all - retail farmers’, wholesale and street markets - to encourage more sustainable practices within the food system.”

A guide to the London wholesale markets has been produced as part of the event, containing a full list of activities, as well as information about the impact of markets on the capital.

The event will be supported by the National Association of British Market Authorities, the World Union of Wholesale Markets and London Farmers’ Markets.
